Jaime Salas
After completing his double degree in Law and Business Administration at the University of Seville, Jaime Salas found in the “Introduction to the Luxembourg Financial Market” program of the Chamber the boost he needed to shape his professional future. Today, he works as an auditor at EY Luxembourg and shares in this interview how the training, internship, and international experience marked a turning point in his career.
Summarize your academic and professional background.
I completed a double degree in Law and Business Administration at the University of Seville.
Professionally, I have worked as an Administrative Assistant at Hotel Sevilla Center and as an Accountant at Aljarafesa, a regional water supply company.
Currently, after having completed the Introduction to the Luxembourg Financial Market program organized by the Chamber, I am working as an Auditor at EY Luxembourg.
At what stage of your academic or professional journey were you when you decided to participate in the “Introduction to the Luxembourg Financial Market” program?
I was finishing my university studies.
What motivated you to enroll in this program?
I received a very good reference from someone close to my family who has been living in Luxembourg for several years and is also a member of the Chamber. Afterwards, I did my own research and realized it was a great opportunity to continue training and set the course of my professional career.
What would you highlight about the training component? Was there any session, topic, or speaker that had a particular impact on you?
The training sessions were very diverse and interesting. I would particularly highlight the wide range of topics we covered during those days, which truly reflected the different aspects of Luxembourg’s financial reality.
After the training, you completed an internship in Luxembourg. Where was it and what were your responsibilities?
After the training, I was hired by EY, one of the Big Four audit firms. I am still working there, performing audit functions for investment funds, particularly funds specializing in the real estate sector.
How was it adapting to an international environment like Luxembourg? What challenges and lessons would you highlight?
In my case, it was easier than I had imagined. Precisely because of the international character of the environment, you quickly meet many people who are in the same situation as you, both Spaniards and people from other parts of Europe and beyond.
I would especially highlight the importance of speaking English fluently in an environment like Luxembourg. It allows you to communicate with many new people, making your experience in a foreign country — yet an international one at the same time — much richer.
To what extent has this experience influenced your future plans?
It has had a big impact, as it made it easier for me to navigate the stage I was in before the course, when I wasn’t sure what to do. At the moment, my plan is to stay here for several years, progressing and learning.
Do you think this experience has changed your view of the European financial sector or your professional expectations?
I believe the financial sector is so vast that dealing with it from the outside is completely different from being part of it.
This stage in Luxembourg is undoubtedly helping me to better understand the financial sector, and it has also made me want to continue working in it for several years, at the very least.
What advice would you give to a student or young professional who is considering participating in the next edition of the program?
I feel that the program I have completed is ideal for people at the early stages of their professional careers, so my advice is to seriously consider participating in it if you intend to start out in the financial sector.
