Thick rootstocks send up clumps to 2 3ft tall and wide of dark green, smooth, swordlike evergreen leaves. Yellow flowers on 4 6ft stems clothed with bright red hairs. Flowers attract hummingbirds. Bloom from late spring to fall if spent flowering spikes are cut to ground. Good cut flowers. Prefers light sandy soil or heavier soil with good drainage.
